Bitrot: Haloscan

More BitRot as old bits of the web die off and are replaced…

Just got an email from Haloscan that they are shutting down on Feb 17th.  As they put it:

Haloscan’s software and hardware is beginning to fail. It is simply not feasible for Echo to continue to properly maintain two separate platforms.

The servers are falling apart.   Way back on my old blogspot blog I used Haloscan for comments because it seemed like a good idea.  I could get better comments “in the cloud.”  They are being nice – you can either export your comments or get a free trial to a paid service that “Echo” offers.

Get your own server and your own domain because once you’ve got that you don’t have to worry about free services shutting down.

I’ve been using Automattic’s “Intense Debate” to enhance my comments, but I think they are just fine. They sync any comments from their servers back into mine so if they go away I’ve still got my own info, safe on my own cloud.  If Automattic (or any open source software provider) shuts down, you’ve got the source, you’ve got your data, you’re protected.

But wait, there's more
